    Why Use Essential Oils?

Are you wondering what all this essential oil hype is about? Over the past couple of years, the internet has exploded with all kinds of information about essential oils, DIY recipes, and essential oil blends. However, essential oils are woven into human history, and have been used therapeutically for thousands of years. Records dating back to 4500 BC describe aromatic substances being used for religious and medicinal applications.

If you are new to the idea of using essential oils, it can all be a little overwhelming. You might be sitting on the sidelines thinking: "Are essential oils actually effective, and how do they fit into modern life? Is something so ancient still applicable today?"

    Modern Medecine

Of course, there are many other (more modern) fixes to our daily health struggles. I'm talking about advil, tylenol, tums, sleeping pills, nytol, xanax, bengay, nexium, prozac .... the list goes on.

If you're anything like me, you may feel that some aspects of modern medicine don't work for you. Sometimes it seems that we are managing sickness, rather than promoting wellness.

Pharmaceutical drugs often trick our body into giving up symptoms, without fixing the underlying cause. This is one of the reasons that drugs have so many side effects. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree that modern medicine has it's place, and is so important for emergent and intensive care.

Essential oils come into the picture when we're talking about promoting wellness, and preventing sickness. Essential oils may be the missing link in modern medicine, helping to prioritize preventative care.

    How Do Essential Oils Work?

What is it about essential oils that make them so easily used by the body?

Essential oils are made up of minute, tiny little lipid-soluble molecules. They are so small, they can administer therapy at the most fundamental levels of the body. One drop contains 40 million trillion molecules - there are very concentrated, and you only have to use a little to get results.

The healing power of essential oils lies in the constituents that it contains, and their vibrational energy. Each essential oil is composed of 200 - 500 natural chemical constituents, and can therefore be helpful in healing many different symptoms in the body. No two oils are the same. The healing power of an essential oil cannot be manufactured in a lab, but must be harvested from the highest quality of plants.

Essential oils are so tiny, they can penetrate through cell membranes and travel throughout the body. They even have the unique ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. The lipid- soluble structure of essential oils is very similar to the makeup of our own cellular membranes. When applied topically, essential oils can travel throughout the body in a matter of minutes.

When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and, almost immediately, the brain. A variety of receptor sites are reached, one of which is the limbic system. The limbic system is the primary centre for our emotional life. Molecules inhaled through the nose or mouth are also carried to the lungs, and interact with the respiratory system. Thus, inhaled essential oils can affect the body through several systems and pathways.

Overall: Essential oils support and balance our endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, nervous, and reproductive systems. They are friendly to us, but hostile to bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi, and toxins.

So, back to our initial question:

    Why Essential Oils?

    The answer is very simple.

I think of essential oils as "healing in a bottle". They don't force the body to cover up symptoms, like a band-aid fix. They work on a deep cellular level, to help the body truly heal. Essential oils help us to maintain our health, rather than manage illness.
