I'm so glad you are ready to learn more about essential oils! Welcome to my oils class - I will walk you through: why quality matters, and how using each of the oils that comes in the Young Living starter kit!
Quality
Not all essential oils are created equally! This means that companies can label their oils as being "100% pure" when really they are exactly the opposite. The truth is there are no regulations whatsoever about labeling of cosmetics (which is what oils intended for topical use are considered in the US).
The vast majority of essential oils from other companies are extracted using high heat, high pressure, and chemical solvents. Although the final product may still contain the aroma of the plant, these harsh processing methods destroy the therapeutic qualities of the oils. Often these cheap oils are also cut with toxic synthetic chemicals, diluted with carrier oils, or even alcohol.
Using lesser-quality oils for therapeutic purposes is never recommended and can be extremely toxic. Since essential oils are the concentrated essence of the plant, any contaminants in the soil or on the plant will become present in the oil. Quality matters when you are looking to get therapeutic results!
What does therapeutic grade mean?
The key to producing a therapeutic grade essential oil is to preserve as many of the delicate aromatic compounds within the essential oil as possible. Most of these elements are very fragile and are destroyed by high temperature and high pressure.

Young Living distills oils at minimum pressures and temperatures to gently coax the oil and all of its compounds into the finished product, even though significant money, time, and labor can be saved by distilling at high pressures and high temperatures, like many companies do. High pressure/high temperature distillation may produce an oil with the fragrance compounds of an oil, but not with the beneficial compounds. Young Living never uses solvents to finish off the distilling process as many companies do.
Only the highest quality of seeds are selected to be cultivated on Young Living's farms. Right from seed through to sealing the bottle of essential oil, Young Living's standards are second to none!

Its refreshing, relaxing scent has balancing properties that also bring a sense of calm. Young Living lavender essential oil is approved as a Natural Health Product by Health Canada, and can be used topically:

It can be used neat (undiluted) on the skin, and encourages healthy, smooth skin. Lavender is very calming when diffused, and is often used to help enhance relaxation before bed. Some favourite diffuser blends with lavender are:
- 3 drops lavender + 3 drops peppermint + 3 drops lemon
- 2 drops lavender + 2 drops copaiba + 2 drops stress away
- 3 drops lavender + 3 drops bergamot + 3 drops cedarwood
Frankincense
The ancient Egyptians used the oil found in the wild-crafted resin of Boswellia carteri trees in Kenya to promote younger, fresher looking skin. Frankincense is also known for its sweet, warm, balsamic aroma with calming properties that can increase spirituality and inner strength. Frankincense helps to support healthy cellular regeneration, and is therefore commonly used in skincare and facial products. My favourite way to use frankincense on my skin, is in this nourishing Facial Oil. Some of my favourite diffuser blends with frankincense are:
- 2 drops frankincense + 4 drops orange + 4 drops citrus fresh
- 2 drops frankincense + 2 drops lavender
- 2 drops frankincense + 2 drops peppermint + 2 drops orange
Lemon
Cold pressed from the fresh fruit peel of lemons grown in Argentina and the United States, lemon oil has refreshing and cooling properties. Its fresh, citrus scent is an instant pick-me-up. Young Living lemon essential oil is approved as a Natural Health Product by Health Canada be used topically or inhaled to reduce the symptoms of cold & cough. Lemon essential oil helps to support a healthy metabolism, and has cleansing properties. It is soothing for the digestive system, and helps support a healthy immune system. Peppermint is a "hot" oil, which means it needs to be diluted with a carrier oil before being applied topically. Otherwise, it is very strong! Young Living peppermint + is a dietary oil that can be used internally to support healthy digestion as well.

R.C.
R.C. stands for "respiratory clearing"! It is an invigorating blend of cypress, spruce, and three varieties of eucalyptus that is comforting when applied to the chest and throat. In Young Living R.C. essential oil is approved as a Natural Health Product by Health Canada can be used topically or inhaled to help relieve colds and coughs! I suggest diluting with a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil) and applying this blend to your chest for relief of coughs.

DiGize is a blend of pure tarragon, ginger, pepppermint, and other essential oils that may bring about calming feelings. Young Living DiGize essential oil is approved as a Natural Health Product by Health Canada, and can be used topically or inhaled to act as a carminative and antispasmodic for symptomatic relief of digestive discomfort. I like to attach a roller filament right to my bottle of digize, and apply it topically over the abdomen when experiencing digestive discomfort. It truly brings relief within seconds!
Purification
The sweet refreshing scent of Purification instantly deodorizes unpleasant odors in the air. This blend contains lemongrass, rosemary, melaleuca (M. alternifolia), myrtle, and citronella. Purification is a great blend to diffuse to freshen any room. Or, leave a glass jar filled with baking soda + 5 drops of purification in your fridge to prevent bad odors.
Copaiba
Distilled from gum resin that is wild harvested from Brazilian copaiba, copaiba contains the highest amounts of beta caryophyllene (55 percent) of any known essential oil. Beta caryophyllene is a natural chemical constituent that has been extensively studied for its ability to modulate the body's response to irritation and inflammation. Copaiba is a great oil for anyone, because we ALL experience inflammation in the body, on some level! This oil is also commonly used topically on babies, for gentle & soothing relief of teething gums.
PanAway
PanAway is a blend containing wintergreen, clove, helichrysum, and peppermint essential oils. These oils or their active components are widely used in massage after physical activity. It contains naturally occurring constituents methyl salicylate, gamma-curcumene, menthol, and eugenol.
Thieves
Thieves essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma. Inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals, Thieves is one of Young Living’s most popular products.
With the benefits of Thieves oil including cleaning power and an irresistibly spicy scent, Young Living offers it as an essential oil blend and as an important ingredient in a full range of home cleaning and personal care products, from dish soap to toothpaste.
