Lately I've been experimenting with making my own DIY toothpaste, especially after reading that some "natural" toothpaste products aren't so natural. I also find that brushing with these ingredients helps to prevent sensitivity, whiten, and re-mineralize my teeth!
This toothpaste is very easy to make, the harder part is cleaning up the sink after you've brushed your teeth with it... Not to worry though, it's all worthwhile in the end, since you'll have the healthiest gums and teeth around!
Detox your mouth
Activated charcoal is getting a lot of hype these days. Activated charcoal is great for detoxing, because it is adsorptive. This means that it actually binds to toxins, chemicals and poisons, and can help pull them out of your body. We are constantly exposed to chemicals and heavy metals these days due to GMO, irradiated, and pesticide filled foods. Detoxing with activated charcoal helps to remove heavy metals that build up in your body throughout the years. Otherwise, these toxins start to cause major problems including slow immune response, cellular damage, allergic reactions, and rapid aging. Bentonite clay works in a similar manner, but activated charcoal adsorbs more poisons and toxins than any other substance known.
Coconut oil also helps to pull toxins out of your system, as I talked about in my blog post Oil Pulling for a Healthy Smile.
Baking soda is of course known for increasing plaque removal, and has been used in toothpaste for a long time. Straight baking soda can be too abrasive for the teeth, so that is why it's good to mix it with other things such as we are here.
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon aluminum free baking soda
- 6 tablespoon coconut oil
- 4 tablespoon bentonite clay
- 2 teaspoon activated charcoal
- 10 drops orange essential oil
- 10 drops thieves essential oil
Mix together in a medium sized bowl. If you need more coconut oil to make it blend well, then add another tablespoon or so.
Benefits of brushing with essential oils:
The orange essential oil gives this toothpaste a great taste, and also helps to whiten your teeth! Thieves is also good for you mouth, helping to kill bacteria and sooth the gums. It is a natural anti-inflammatory, reduces gum disease, and is a well known remedy for toothaches. Clove also has one of the highest ORAC scores around, so it is a strong anti-oxidant! Antioxidants can slow aging, degeneration, and protect the body from unfriendly bacteria and viruses.

Great article. I've been doing some research on tooth pastes as well and it's definitely hard to pick a good one. Especially since your mouth is vital to your immune system and other functions!

Thank you! You're right, it is so vital, and such a good indication of your overall health 🙂

Hi! Thank you for an excellent article! I just made the recipe (my first time making toothpaste!) but I melted the coconut oil to make sure it fully mixed. Now it's hardened again and is rock solid. Any suggestions on how to keep it "paste-y"? I thought about putting it in the food processor.... 😁
Jasmine Ouellette says
Hi Alicia! I think that whipping it would definitely help the texture. When I make it I do not heat the coconut oil, so it stays more like a paste. You could also play around with the ratios of ingredients, maybe add more coconut oil when you put it in the food processor, but don't melt it. Let me know if it works out! Glad you liked my post 🙂

I see your picture has a metal spoon. Lovely picture but I believe the bentonite clay should be handled with Non-metal utensil unless it's sterling silver 🙂
Jasmine Ouellette says
Hi Aalan, thanks for the heads up - it is in fact a sterling silver spoon, that's all we use in my house! 🙂

If I don't have thieves...but I have orange....can I omit and have same effects or is there an alternative?
Jasmine Ouellette says
Hi Kelly, Theives is a proprietary blend by Young Living containing Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon bark oil, Eucalyptus oil, Rosemary oil. I highly recommend it, but if you don't have it, you could use clove and cinnamon. Always make sure you're using the highest quality essential oils, especially when you're using them in your mouth! 🙂 Here is more info on Essential Oils for Dental Health: https://nourishmintkitchen.ca//2017/01/21/using-essential-oils-in-your-dental-routine/

Is there an expiration for this recipe? What is the best container to use for storing it? Thanks! 🙂
Jasmine Ouellette says
Hi Gracie,
Well, coconut oil has quite a long shelf life. I have read that it should last about 18 months after the container is opened. However, when you are making your own natural products such as this, I would recommend just making a small batch to ensure that it remains fresh. Since there are no harsh preservatives (as in commercial products/ cosmetics), you will be better off this way! I like to store this recipe in a very small glass mason jar.

Hi is the bentonite clay the powder mixed in or the one from a tun already mixed up please confirm . Thanks

Does your recipe help with cavities that you know of? I was looking around at recipes and found another re-mineralizing recipe that said it helped with cavities so I was unsure if you thought your recipe did or not. I really liked your recipe better so I was hoping. Thanks!

First time user here. I made this and was surprised to see how much it whitened my teeth after one use. Can I use this every day over a long period of time?
Also, I’ve read about mineral drops. Is the Bentonite clay just as effective as mineral drops? Should I consider adding those, too?
Thanks! I loved how easy it was to make this.

Thank you do much but how long does it last in a container?
