If you're reading this, I'm sure you've tried your fair share of natural deodorants that don't really work that well. After years of searching (unsuccessfully) for the perfect non-toxic deodorant, I finally decided to try making it myself! I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's very simple to make (only 4 ingredients), and it actually works!
All you will need is:
- 2 tablespoon aluminum free baking soda
- 2 tbsp organic arrowroot powder
- ~ 6 tablespoon tbsp vegetable glycerine
- 15 drops lavender essential oil (or your essential oil of choice)
Stir the ingredients together in a small glass mason jar, adding the essential oil at the end. I like to use an immersion hand blender to make sure that it is really mixed well. The consistency should look like this when everything is blended together:
If the consistency is too solid, add more vegetable glycerin until it is smooth. Vegetable glycerin is very hydrating for you skin, so always add more if you find the recipe too dry.
This is a deodorant cream, and you will only need to use a very small amount under each arm. ⅛th to a ¼ of a teaspoon should do the trick. This is the only natural deodorant I have found that actually works - all day long!

I've used a recipe similar to this using coconut oil instead of the glycerin and always get oil staining on my clothing. Do you have that problem with this recipe?
Jasmine Ouellette says
Hi Aleta! No, I don't get oil stains with this recipe. I used to make the recipe with coconut oil, but I didn't like it as much! The glycerine is actually very hydrating for your skin, so it's good for you as well!

Could one use tapioca flour instead of arrowroot powder? Are they the same thing? Here in South Africa, no-one refers to "arrowroot".
Jasmine Ouellette says
Hi Barry! I believe they are very similar powders, although they come from the root of two different plants. However, these can both be used as a binding agent - so I think it would work! Please let me know if you try!

Do you just apple this with your hands?
Jasmine Ouellette says
Yes! I usually keep a little spoon handy because you will need to stir it often. Just apply about 1/4 tsp and wash any excess off your hands. 🙂
