4 Little Known Essential Oils for Acne

Just about everyone has heard of using tea tree essential oil to treat acne. But these 4 little known essential oils are scientifically proven to help reduce symptoms of acne, and are actually approved by Health Canada as Natural Health Products! This means there is documented evidence demonstrating that they are highly effective at reducing symptoms and providing relief from acne. With a long history of being beneficial ingredients in cosmetics, you can use any of these oils to help with the relief of acne symptoms:

    1. Carrot seed

This essential oil is high in vitamin C! This soothing, earthy aroma is widely used in aromatherapy for the appearance of healthy-looking skin and gives a refreshing feeling when diffused. Carrot Seed oil helps to illuminate and even out skin tones, providing moisture and relief from common skin irritations like eczema, dermatitis and acne. It is an ideal ingredient for skin creams to nourish, rejuvenate and maintain the appearance of healthy- looking skin.

Ways to use: Mix with Rose, Frankincense and a carrier oil for a daily facial application. Add Carrot Seed to this Radiant Facial Elixir to revitalize your skin.

    2. Bergamot

Bergamot works well as a spot-treatment for acne. In addition, bergamot can also be used for relief from eczema and dermatitis. Dilute 1 drop of bergamot to 15 ml of carrier oil, and apply topically.

*Bergamot is photosensitive. Be cautious when applying this essential oil if you are going to be out in direct sunlight.  Apply at least 12 hours before sun exposure, or cover area of application to ensure that you don't get a burn. There are more tips for photosensitive oils on the Young Living blog.

    3. Cedarwood

Cedarwood has a long history of use as a beneficial ingredient in cosmetic preparations for oily skin. It can be especially helpful for refractory acne, as described in this study (published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.) In addition, cedarwood can be used to relieve minor skin irritation, cuts, bruises & burns. Add 8 drops of essential oil to 10 ml carrier oil and apply once daily.

    4. Helichrysum

Helichrysum is one of the more costly essential oils,
but after seeing the healing powers of this oil first-hand, we always have a bottle of this around. Derived from the flowering tops in EasternEurope, helichrysum was traditionally used to support healthy looking skin. The helichrysum flowers are commonly called "everlasting" or "immortal." It is so soothing for the skin, and has amazing restorative properties. If you suffer with a lot of scarring due to acne, this essential oil would be a good one for you. It can be diluted with a carrier oil (such as coconut oil) and applied topically. Helichrysum has many other natural health benefits as well, so don't rule this one out just because it is costly! Remember: a little goes a very long way, and you only need 1-3 drops for each application.
