Why I love juicing
I find that juices made with root vegetables make for a great afternoon snack, as they can actually be pretty filling. Always remember to drink your fresh juice on an empty stomach, that way you are sure to absorb all of the nutrients!
Health benefits of beets
Beets get their dark red purple colour from a pigment called betacyanin. This nutrient is a powerful antioxidant, which means that it helps to prevent free radical damage. Beets also have anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. They are high in iron, potassium, niacin (vitamin B3), copper and vitamin C.
Beets are a great vegetable to help cleanse and detox the body. They are good for your lymphatic system, nerve function, and can also increase energy!
Tips for juicing
I like to leave skin on the beets and carrots, but of course peel the pineapple and citrus fruits. My trusty champion juicer here can shred just about any veggie, and I don't have to worry about taking out seeds or anything, it emulsifies them into the pulp!
Finding an affordable juicer
If you're interested in juicing but worried about the cost of a juicer - it absolutely doesn't have to be expensive. I bought this used juicer in Victoria, BC for $40, and flew it across the country in my luggage... It used to make a weird sound when I turned it off and the motor was slowing down, but ever since it got relocated to Ontario it stopped doing that. Someday I will invest in a more expensive, fancy juicer... but for now this one works quite well!
