    Spirulina Superfood Smoothie

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe Comments

The best spirulina superfood smoothie, that is packed with protein, antioxidants, iron, calcium and vitamins.

I'm really excited to share with you my smoothie recipe for the newest superfood that I've added to my diet... spirulina! Spirulina is a powdered form of blue green algae, packed with protein, antioxidants, iron, calcium and vitamins!

This is really a great superfood for vegetarians... only problem is, some people find that the taste is very strong. BUT, the good news is: I have figured out a couple of tricks to help you incorporate this awesome superfood into your smoothie, and it won't taste like you're drinking blue green algae at all! But first, a couple of interesting nutritional benefits of Spirulina:

    Protein

Spirulina is 60 -70% protein. 100 g of spriulina contains 57 g of protein. To compare, 100 grams of beef contains only 26 g of protein!

    Iron

Iron is important for energy, your integumentary system, and your immune system. 1-2 teaspoons of spirulina contains up to 22% of your daily recommended intake of iron.

    Antioxidants

Spirulina contains antioxidants such as beta-carotene and lutein. These carotenoids are potent antioxidants, which means they help prevent oxidative damage due to free radicals, which we are exposed to every day.

    Calcium

Calcium is of course very important for building and maintaining healthy, strong bones. Spirulina is high in calcium (120 mg calcium per 100 g spirulina).

    Vitamins

Spirulina contains high doses of vitamins B, D, C and E. Its a natural multivitamin!

I did some experimenting and found the perfect combination for this green superfood smoothie! You won't even know that your drinking blue-green algae, I promise!
